The Drexel Dragons are the 13th team in our 2022 men’s college lacrosse schedule preview series and the third team from the CAA. Drexel finished 10-3 overall in 2021 and 6-2 in CAA play. The Dragons defeated Hofstra in the CAA title game for their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2014, but fell to Notre Dame in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Here's their entire 2022 spring schedule:

WHO'S IN?

  • Penn Quakers (2/12)

  • UMBC Retrievers (2/19)

  • UAlbany Great Danes (2/26)

  • Saint Joseph's Hawks (3/8)

  • Marquette Golden Eagles (3/12)

  • Villanova Wildcats (3/19)

WHO'S OUT?

  • High Point Panthers (16-15 L in 2020)

CIRCLE THESE DATES

  • 2/12 at Penn: Drexel makes the hop, skip, and jump a mile and a half south in University City to Penn, who will be playing in their first game against a D1 opponent since 2020. Penn still has talent, highlighted by midfielder Sam Handley who played in the season opener in 2020 before missing the rest of the year with an injury. The last time these teams met was in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, highlighted by Drexel scoring three goals in a span of 11.3 seconds late in the second quarter. Nick Saputo won back-to-back faceoffs and scored goals off both en route to a Dragons upset.

  • 2/19 at UMBC: This will be the first time these two teams meet since 1995. Very surprising to find that out given Drexel head coach Brian Voelker played under former UMBC head coach Don Zimmerman when they were both at Johns Hopkins from 1987-1990! And the campuses are less than two hours apart! This shouldn't be the first time in 22 years these teams meet.

  • 2/26 vs. UAlbany: The last two meetings have been one-goal victories for the Great Danes. They've also won the last six matchups dating back to 2015. Before this run, Drexel won five straight with the last two coming by a goal. So does that mean the UAlbany run comes to an end?

  • 4/23 vs. Delaware: These two teams were the best in the CAA in the regular season. They split their regular season meetings with the road team coming out on top. They should be the top two again and hopefully they meet in the CAA title game. But knowing the CAA, nothing's given.
