VMI announces opponents for 2023 season
Colleges are preparing to begin their 2022-23 academic years, which also means non-fall student-athletes are returning to campus.
And even though it's still summer, we're starting to learn of some spring schedules for the 2023 lacrosse season as we saw with the ASUN conference schedule.
The VMI Keydets announced their opponents for the upcoming 2023 season, 15 in all. With their move back to the MAAC, VMI will face six nonconference opponents including one Division I newcomer in Queens.
Take a look at their opponents along with last year's results if available:
Detroit Mercy Titans (2-9) (Lost to Titans 16-11)
Hampton Pirates (0-10) (Defeated Pirates 15-6 and 21-5)
High Point Panthers (7-8) (Lost to Panthers 16-5)
Manhattan Jaspers (8-7) (Lost to Jaspers 14-10) - MAAC game
Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers (5-10) (Defeated Mountaineers 8-7) - MAAC game
Quinnipiac Bobcats (2-11) - MAAC game
Siena Saints (6-9) - MAAC game
Bellarmine Knights (4-13) (Lost to Knights 17-8)
Canisius Golden Griffins (2-12) - MAAC game
LIU Sharks (7-8) - MAAC game
Marist Red Foxes (7-8) - MAAC game
Queens Royals (12-5 in Division II)
Sacred Heart Pioneers (3-10) - MAAC game
St. Bonaventure Bonnies (11-4) (Lost to Bonnies 9-8 in OT)
Wagner Seahawks (3-9) - MAAC game
Gone from the schedule are former SoCon opponents Jacksonville, Mercer, and Richmond. On the nonconference side, Cleveland State, Lafayette, and Monmouth are out.
As we've found out with the ASUN, it appears that everyone in the MAAC will play each other this year, resulting in nine conference games. No word on the format of the MAAC Tournament.
Typically, there'll be very few schedules that come out before fall ball concludes. The majority of schedules will come out in November and December, with some being released in the first half of January. But a slate being released in August or September always has a special place in my heart.
VMI will release their schedule Monday night.
